Leeuwenbergh

Since 2004, the medieval Leeuwenbergh building has been used as a venue for cultural events. Between 2008 and 2014, the church was used by Vredenburg as a small concert venue for acoustic chamber music, jazz and world music concerts.

History
The unique Leeuwenbergh building was constructed in 1567 as a hospital for people suffering from the plague. The construction was financed with an endowment from the childless Agnes van Leewenberch, who left all her money to the poor. Because the illness was on its way out by then, the property was also used as a guesthouse.

In 1678, the building was destroyed by a fire, but after its reconstruction it continued to serve as a guesthouse. It was not until the late 18th century that Leeuwenbergh began to be used for other purposes, including as an army barracks, a university building, a laboratory and as accommodation for pharmacists in training. Between 1930 and 2004, the property was managed by the Dutch Reformed Church. It is currently owned by the Friends of Leeuwenbergh Foundation (Stichting Vrienden van Leeuwenbergh).
