Marlies Neugebauer: Escape with Me

Marlies Neugebauer: Escape with Me

This exhibition is about the urge – and ways to escape reality, but not without wanting to take a part of this reality with you.

In ‘Escape with Me’ I invite you to escape together — not away from the everyday, but with the everyday as our baggage. Every fragment of reality travels with us: small gestures, loose memories, silent worries, real problems and big dreams.

We daydream into unknown futures, or dig our way back to places that only exist in us. Sometimes we hide in new worlds of our own making, not to disappear, but to deal with everything that concerns us.

Escaping here does not mean leaving reality behind, but recreating it. What we take with us are traces of life, and what we find is a new way of existing.

Marlies Neugebauer (1974, NL) is a mixed media artist who lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Through sculptures and installations, Marlies aspires to tell stories and depict emotions that explore the contrasting concepts of everyday life, such as order and disorder, perfection and imperfection, happiness and sadness, and life and death. By delving into these polarities, she explores how they can coexist in a newfound balance, despite their inherent tensions. Her artistic approach consists of creating vibrant compositions and working in a collage-like manner, which allows her to create order out of chaos while responding to the coincidences that may arise during the creative process.

Her works are an exploration of combining the one dimensional with the three dimensional, such as for example ceramic sculpture and photography.
