Utrecht through the Lens of Moesman

At the beginning of the 20th century, life in the Netherlands changed dramatically: electric lighting, telephony, railways, and the introduction of the first cars signaled the dawn of a new era. With portable cameras, daily life could easily be captured, and no one did this more often in Utrecht than Johannes Anthonius Moesman (1859-1927).
Of the hundreds of photos preserved by the Utrecht Archives from this period, a large portion comes from Moesman. This Utrecht-based draughtsman, lithographer, and photographer sold his works in his shop on the Neude. His images of markets, fairs, parades, neighborhoods, and well-known and unknown places in the city provide a beautiful view of Utrecht in the period from 1900 to 1920.
On display from October 10, 2024, in the Expo.
