It once started as an event where people who are deaf, can hear, and everything in between, could get together for an evening of dancing. It’s since evolved into an inspiring, inclusive festival of the senses, where everyone can experience music and culture. Come to this year’s edition of Sencity Festival and let your senses be tickled.
Sencity Festival wants to create an accessible experience for all, whether you can hear or not, use a wheelchair or are partially sighted or blind. The aim: to bring together people who usually live totally separate lives. What better place to meet people than on the dancefloor? Sencity Festival is breaking down the boundaries and promoting inclusive social contact in an effort to fight feelings of loneliness and boost self-confidence –particularly among people who often feel excluded from cultural events.
At Sencity Festival, you can hear, taste, feel and see the music and culture. All of the artists undergo a research and production process with a ‘sense director’. Every song is examined to establish the theme, the feeling the artist wants to evoke in the audience and how this intention can be enhanced by adding smell, taste, visual effects and performance to the acts. Some of the acts on stage include deaf performers, who bring the music to life through expressive movements and Dutch Sign Language. The music becomes a total experience which transcends pure listening – it becomes an experience that is open to people who are deaf or have a hearing impairment, and creates greater awareness among visitors who can hear.
