The Steenweg probably runs parallel to the former course of the Rhine through the city centre. The part of the Rhine at the Steenweg between the Stadhuisbrug and the Bakkerbrug would have been transformed into the current Oudegracht. We are talking about a long, long time ago. The eastern part of the Steenweg, towards the Dom, was a market area around 1200. Another two centuries later it was decreed that only butter, cheese and eggs could be traded there. In 1960 it was already the busy shopping street as we know it today.
